Dame Deirdre Hine
Dame Deirdre Hine, former chief medical officer for Wales and chair of the Commission for Health Improvement, has been chairman of the Bupa Foundation since January 2004.
Deirdre Hine qualified in Medicine at the Welsh National School of Medicine (now the University of Wales College of Medicine) in 1961. After hospital posts at Cardiff Royal Infirmary and a short period in general practice in the South Wales Valleys she trained in public health medicine, becoming a specialist in community medicine in 1974. In 1984 she became principal medical officer at the Welsh Office in 1984, deputy chief medical officer in 1985, director of the Welsh Breast Cancer Screening Service in 1988 and chief medical officer for Wales in 1990.
Following retirement in 1997 she was appointed to the Audit Commission in 1998, to the chair of the Commission for Health Improvement in August 1999 and was elected president of the Royal Society of Medicine 2000-2002. In 2001 she was appointed as an independent member to the House of Lords Appointments Commission. She is also non-executive director of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, a vice-president of Marie Curie Cancer Care and a member of the Science Committee of Cancer Research UK.
She was appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire for services to medicine in Wales in 1996 and has been awarded numerous degrees and honorary fellowships. These include honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Royal College of General Practitioners, and honorary membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
