Professor J Monson
John Monson was born in Dublin, Ireland where he went to medical school, graduating from Trinity College Dublin in 1979. He moved to Leeds for further surgical training and a research fellowship in immunology and nutrition. He obtained his MD in 1987 and returned to Ireland to complete his higher surgical specialist training. He then spent a year at Mayo Clinic studying immunology and surgical oncology.
In 1990 he took up the post of senior lecturer in surgery and assistant director of the Academic Surgical Unit at St. Mary's Hospital, Imperial College, London. In 1993 he moved to take up his current post as foundation professor of surgery and head of department, Academic Surgical Unit, University of Hull.
Throughout his career he has pursued academic interests at all levels ranging from basic laboratory research, through clinical studies and trials to issues of health service research. His laboratory research programmes have consistently centred on gastroenterology, cancer and immunology. Current research interests also include significant programmes in psychoneuroimmunology in collaboration between the research laboratories, clinical surgical department and behavioural oncology. He has over 200 publications in peer reviewed journals.
John Monson is a colorectal surgeon with special interests in minimally invasive surgery - particularly as applied to cancer.
