Professor Philip Poole-Wilson
Professor Philip A Poole-Wilson (BA, MB, BChir, MA, MD, FRCP, FACC, FESC, FMedSci) is British Heart Foundation Simon Marks Professor of Cardiology, Head of Cardiovascular Sciences, National Heart & Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant Physician at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals, London, UK.
He qualified (MB) in 1967. Until 1972, he held clinical positions at various hospitals in London and from 1973, was a British American Travelling Research Fellow at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). His obtained his MD (higher degree) in 1975. After holding positions as senior lecturer (National Heart Hospital) and reader in cardiology, he was appointed as Professor of Cardiology at the University of London in 1983. In the period 1990-2000 he served as clinical director, research director, board non-executive director and subsequently head of division at NHLI.
Professor Poole-Wilson was President of the European Society of Cardiology (1994-1996) and was President of the World Heart Federation (2003-2004). He has served on many committees within the Department of Health, MRC, British Heart Foundation and Welcome Trust in the UK. He is on the editorial board of several leading journals and is Chairman or Member of the steering or monitoring committees of several large clinical trials. In 2001 he was awarded Le Prix Europe et Medecine 2001 de l'Institut des Sciences de la Sante, Paris. As of July 2004, he had more then 420 citations recorded on PubMed.
