£10,000 care award - Bupa Foundation awards scheme call for entries
26 June 2007
The search is on to find the winner of the 2007 Bupa Foundation Care Award which recognises excellence in the development of care for older people.
Bupa Foundation is to award £10,000 for excellence in the development of care for older people. The winning work will address any need or service development designed to improve the experience of older people and those who care for them.
The Care Award is one of seven categories within the Bupa Foundation awards scheme. The other six awards recognise excellence in the following areas - Health at Work, Communication, Research, Epidemiology and Clinical Excellence and new in 2007, Patient Safety.
Applications for the Care Award should be original although they may draw on established technologies and practices. The submission must demonstrate a clear assessment of service purpose and planning, a description of the service, a design of evaluation, particularly addressing continuing needs, and an analytical strategy appropriate to the service design.
Last year’s award was presented to Dr Opinder Sahota on behalf of the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Dr Sahota headed up a project that successfully piloted the use of bed and beside chair pressure sensors to dramatically reduce the number of bedside falls in the hospital by 45 percent.
Dr Opinder Sahota said: "Winning this award has been wonderful recognition for the work we have been doing. It has helped provide a platform for further research into the prevention of falls of older people in hospital and provided a great opportunity to build on the successes we’ve already achieved."
The vice-chairman of the Bupa Foundation, Dr Andrew Vallance-Owen, said: "There is an enormous amount of innovation going on in the field of care of older people and the tireless work going on in this area deserves all the recognition it can get.
"The standard of submissions for the Bupa Foundation awards is always very impressive and we are looking forward to receiving applications that will make a real difference to the care Britain’s older people receive."
Applications should have been received by 2 July 2007. All category winners are invited to join a distinguished panel of judges at the Bupa Foundation Awards Dinner at Lincoln’s Inn in London, on 14 November 2007.
