Judging criteria and process
There is tremendous competition for BUPA Foundation specialist grants and, before deciding which proposals to support, the governors take into account:
- the originality of the research proposal
- the long-term implications of the research proposal and the likelihood of success
- relevance to the specific topic. For example, in 2002 the theme was patient choice and education in health care so the degree to which consumers were involved was noted
- the importance and relevance of the research
At the closing date for proposals, applications are initially forwarded to BUPA Foundation governors for scoring, on a scale of zero (poor) to ten (excellent). Following that, a short-list of between six and ten projects is sent for external peer review. Finally, the BUPA Foundation board decides which projects to support.
