Up to £750,000 offered in total available for projects on social determinants of health

Social determinants of health

The economic and social conditions under which people live can influence their health. These conditions are a result of social, economic, and political forces. The World Health Organisation (Closing the gap in a generation: Health equity through action on the social determinants of health, 2008) recognises the influence of social determinants on personal well-being.

The Bupa Foundation wishes to advance thinking and practice on social determinants of health. These might include:

  • psychological factors including stress at work
  • maternity services and impacts on maternal and infant health
  • other socio-economic effects on child health
  • income inequality and impacts on life expectancy
  • the national economic environment – effects of recession and/or growth
  • nutrition, diet and health
  • housing and education

The Foundation is offering up to £750,000 funding for one or more projects over one, two or three years. Entries must be well-designed studies that can increase our understanding of the social determinants of health.

The competition is open to those based in the UK, Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Spain and Thailand. Entries must be compliant with relevant legislation if applicable. The Bupa Foundation governors will seek at least one peer reviewer from the home country of each short-listed entry.
